What is HTML5?

HTML5 is a new revision of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), the standard programming language for describing the contents and appearance of web pages.

HTML5 allows the web browser to become a development platform. Launched in 2007, refinements are expected to continue for several years before HTML5 becomes universally used.

A primary goal for HTML5 is to ensure interoperability among browsers so that web applications and documents behave the same way no matter which HTML5-compliant browser is used to access them.

What is HTML5 being used for:

  •     Improvements in usability and user experience
  •     New tags that to help developers classify important content
  •     Sites rich in media (audio & video)
  •     Mobile apps and games
  •     SEO optimised sites - website crawling and indexing
  •     An alternative to Flash and Silverlight
